Composing Carv (for one violinist) is a process of self-identification. The repetition, transformation, and obsessive treatment of fragile sound materials respond to the art of traditional Chinese seal carving, in which intricate patterns and characters are compressed into an extremely limited space. The careful control of layout, space, density, and texture reveals not only the carver’s technical mastery but, more importantly, the seal’s aesthetic function as a marker of personal identity.

This piece is composed for and dedicated to Miranda Cuckson..
